In just a few days, many of us will take time to honor our mothers – or perhaps be honored by our children. According to Hallmark Corporation, the famed greeting card provider, 113 million cards will be sent to mark the day.
Here at WellShare International, much of our work focuses on mothers.
Our work with child spacing with Karen and Somali refugees here in the U.S. and with communities in Uganda – helps mothers shape their lives. We provide husbands and wives with education and referrals for family planning methods that honor their cultures, to ensure healthier mothers, children, marriages and families.
Through our nutrition classes, mothers are learning how to adapt their shopping and cooking choices to provide healthier meals for themselves and their families. Pa and five family members, attended the class. “I learned to read food labels,” said Pa, who now uses the knowledge when grocery shopping. To celebrate the successful completion of the course, attendees were recognized with a certificate. “My mother-in-law loved the class,” said Pa. “She hung her certificate on her wall!” (Pa’s mother-in-law is pictured with her certificate.)
In Tanzania, our Survive and Thrive program reaches young single mothers with peer support, health education and small business skills. Through these groups, mothers learn from each other and develop a much-needed source of income to provide for their children.
While you may already have sent your mother a greeting card, please consider honoring her with a gift to WellShare. In doing so, you will support mothers who are working hard to live healthy and productive lives for themselves and their children. Thank you for your support and generosity.
P.S. If you’re shopping online for Mother’s Day, be sure to make WellShare your organization of choice with the AmazonSmile program.
