At 42 years old, Armando learned that he had advanced gum disease that would require the complete removal of his teeth. 

Armando had never received annual preventative dental care due to many systemic, language, and cultural barriers. It wasn’t until Armando met WellShare CHW Judith that he finally felt safe enough to confide in someone about his oral health concerns.

Armando was afraid to take the first steps on his journey to oral health because he had never visited a dentist and did not believe he would ever be able to afford the dental care he so desperately needed.

Judith was able to quickly identify the severity of his condition and found him an appointment with NorthPoint Health and Wellness Center, a local community clinic that provides accessible and affordable health services to people facing barriers to accessing care. 

After Armando’s initial visit, it was determined that the treatment needed would be extensive and prolonged. Judith encouraged Armando to accept help and inspired him to commit to the steps necessary to regain his physical health and reclaim his confidence. Through Judith’s fierce advocacy, Armando did not have to endure this challenging process alone. 

Through a series of multiple appointments, all of Armando’s teeth were pulled, and his gums began to heal. During this healing phase, he did not have his teeth and experienced severe pain that limited his ability to eat comfortably. At this stage, Armando’s physical and mental health was challenged, and he could have easily slipped into feelings of despair and regret for deciding to undergo this process. Though with Judith’s consistent presence and encouragement, Armando was able to stay the course until the dentist cleared him to receive dentures.  

Almost immediately after receiving his dentures, Armando shared with Judith that he felt like a new person. With his new teeth, came a new sense of gratitude and confidence he hadn’t previously experienced. Armando reported remarkable improvements to his physical and mental health in the subsequent weeks and months.

As his physical pain, fear, and shame dissipated, Armando received a new lease on life. Now, he can’t stop smiling.
