On August 25, WellShare International and the Karen Organization of Minnesota (KOM) held their first Karen Health Resource Fair. The fair brought together dental, physical, and mental health organizations as well as workforce development, housing, and other supporting organizations. They included the Minnesota Department of Health, Association for Non Smokers-Minnesota, the Hmong American Partnership, The Center for Victims of Torture and many more.
With about 250 people, the fair was very well received in the Karen community. Karen families and community members came together and enjoyed the day learning about culture specific health topics, participated in poetry and art contests or played volleyball and soccer in the youth tournament.
A mother of a Karen boy participating in the soccer contest said: “This event is very good for our community. We never have a health fair like this before. I learned about many resources that came today. What I like the most was seeing my kid get to play soccer with his friend for the tournament. We don’t usually have this opportunity for our children.”
WellShare and The Karen Organization of Minnesota hope to continue this event in the future.
