Meet Phoebe!
Phoebe Chastain
EDUCATION/BACKGROUND
I graduated from Carleton College with a BA in American studies and womens and gender studies, and a strong interest in public health. I have a background in sexuality education and supported a teen pregnancy prevention initiative in Rice County, Minnesota, and then worked for a contraceptive social marketing organization in Washington, D.C. Most recently, before coming to WellShare, I organized preventive health events with community health workers in rural Cameroon.
AREA OF WORK
As a program manager, I oversee three projects:
- Family planning outreach
- Strengthening the Somali Safety Net initiative
- Female genital cutting prevention and outreach project
LOCATION
WellShare International HQ, Minneapolis, MN
INTERESTING FACT:
I enjoy challenging myself to new experiences and traveling to new places.
WHY WELLSHARE?
For many years, the motto Education is Prevention has guided my career. Its so simple, yet so powerful. After leaving Cameroon, I hoped to find a way to continue to work with community health workers and empower people to make informed choices about their health. I feel so lucky to be a part of an organization that shares the same value for preventive education.
YOUR FAVORITE PART
I learn so much from seeing the community health workers in action and I enjoy helping them feel motivated and prepared to do their jobs.
QUOTE:
I truly believe in the community health worker model to address health disparities. Through building trust and confronting health barriers, CHWs grant underserved people more access to health care and empower the whole community to live healthier lives.
