Medical Volunteers needed in Tanzania

WellShare International is looking for physicians that are interested in volunteering in a local hospital in rural Tanzania, Africa.

Hospital Location

Songambele Hospital is located in Nkololo Town in Bariadi District, Simiyu Region, near the Serengeti, in Tanzania. The hospital was founded by a Wisconsin-born priest, who has worked in Tanzania for more than 50 years. Services at the hospital currently include a dispensary, laboratory (with the district’s largest blood bank), a maternity ward, and a 30-bed inpatient ward. At the moment, approximately 560 patients and 110 inpatients are being treated per month, with the hope to expand the number of patients to 1,500.

Work and Accommodation

There is an urgent need for volunteers with surgical specialties. Other specialties including OB/GYN would be welcome as well. Volunteers would be provided with housing which includes two shared rooms (up to 2 people per room), shared bathrooms and a shared kitchen. Meals can be provided and food is also available in the local market. Internet is available, but sometimes limited.


Upon arrival at Mwanza airport, volunteers will be collected by a hospital staff member and transported to their accommodation. It is an approximately 3-hour ride to the site.

Start dates and duration

Volunteer positions are available all-year, depending on available staff to supervise. A minimum stay of 2 weeks is recommended. Ideally, volunteers would commit to 3 weeks or longer.


Full qualifications as a doctor & relevant license to practice.


Volunteer positions are entirely self-funded.

Visa: Depending on type of visa and length of stay between: $100 – $500.

Airfare: International flights range from $1,800 – $2,200. Additional local flight within Tanzania: approximately $300.
